Shiremanstown Borough Celebrates 150 years with three day event

Airdate: Tuesday, June 25, 2024

Shiremanstown will be celebrating 150 years in 2024. The borough is located between Camp Hill, Mechanicsburg, Lower Allen Township, and Hampden Township.

Mayor Tammie Dailey of Shiremanstown says there’s so much history in Shiremanstown. According to an article written by former Shiremanstown Mayor Mike Weaver, Daniel Shireman, the founder, was kidnapped from his German home and placed on a sailing vessel. The young boy found himself as a stowaway bound for America. The captain questioned Daniel about his name, and he responded, “I’m a shireman.” As a result, Shireman was the name put on his documents as a family name.

“I guess you would call it a rags to riches story, considering, you know, his beginnings here in the United States.”

Shiremanstown was founded in 1797 and was officially incorporated in 1874.

To celebrate 150 years as a borough, there will be a three-day celebration that kicks off Friday August 16 at 5 p.m. at Memorial Park and Wraps up Sunday August 18. Activities include a pancake breakfast, food trucks, parades, historical songs and stories about the borough, a kids zone, and so much more.

“I just can’t wait to see everybody getting together. I can’t wait to see the adults and children smiling. Everybody is getting along. It’s just going to be such a great event.”
