Brooke DeBeridne, left, and sister Emma DeBerdine, Penn Manor grads, have been named to the U.S. Olympic women's field hockey team.

Penn Manor grads and sisters Brooke and Emma DeBerdine have been named to the 16-player roster that will compete for the United States in women’s field hockey at the upcoming Olympics in Paris, USA Field Hockey announced Tuesday.

Manheim Central grad Jillian Wolgemuth also was part of the 28-player pool that was considered for the team but suffered an injury earlier this month in an FIH Hockey Pro League game.

“Losing Jill Wolgemuth from our group is a big loss,” U.S. head coach David Passmore said in a statement. “She has worked diligently over the past couple of years and her attitude and leadership was important to the team’s growth and Olympic qualification in India.”

The DeBerdines are both midfielders who attended the University of Maryland.

Brooke, 25, recorded her 50th international appearance on June 6 against Great Britain. She has been a member of the national team since June 2021.

Emma, 22, has been a member of the national team since July 2022. She has made 44 international appearances.

“The full centralized group of 28 athletes have worked exceptionally hard this year and made the final selection difficult,” Passmore said. “While the results weren’t what we wanted during the European leg of FIH Hockey Pro League, we have diligently reviewed video and performance analysis while choosing a group of athletes we feel can push for a quarterfinal berth in Paris.”

Wolgemuth, 26, has been a member of the national team since June 2021. She has made 65 international appearances.

The United States earned its Olympic berth in January during a last-chance qualifying tournament in Ranchi, India.

Team USA did not qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, which ended up being held in 2021 due to the pandemic.

The Americans begin play in the 12-team tournament in Paris on July 27.

Including the DeBerdines, nine of the 16 players on the roster went to high school in Pennsylvania.

The other players from the state are Sophia Gladieux (Oley Valley), Ashley Hoffman (Twin Valley), Karlie Kisha (Hamburg), Kelee Lepage (Twin Valley), Ashley Sessa (Episcopal Academy), Meredith Sholder (Emmaus) and Maddie Zimmer (Hershey).

Two of the three alternates also are from Pennsylvania. They are Jenny Rizzo (Hershey) and Cassie Sumfest (Lewisburg).
