Spring House Brewing Co. made a special pale ale for the 2024 US Women's Open.

Among the beverages being served at the U.S. Women’s Open is a limited edition beer by Lancaster’s Spring House Brewing Co.

Spring House was tapped by the United States Golf Association to create the brew, having already made one served at Lancaster Country Club the last time the USGA event happened there.

Spring House’s 2015 Open contribution was an on-tap-only lemon farmhouse. Its new Championship Pale Ale is brewed with El Dorado, Amarillo and Citra hops and will be available in cans.

“I went to our brewer and said, ‘Can you craft a pale ale? Nothing crazy. We want to have mass appeal but also appeal to the craft beer crowd,’” Spring House sales manager Joe Armstrong says. “And our brewer, Mitch (Romig), loves the idea of coming up with a recipe. He’ll do that anytime he can.”

The swinging silhouette on the side of the can is by Lancaster artist Elaina Posey, one of many creatives who have done special editions for Spring House.

“We just revisited a couple people we worked with before and we thought her aesthetic would work really well,” Armstrong says. “And in a weekend she ended up putting together that piece.”

USGA did have notes, he says. The can’s original artwork didn’t include the Open trophy. It does now.

The golf organization tapped Philadelphia-based Stateside Vodka to provide spirit-based options for the week. Stateside was featured in Forbes magazine last month for its explosive growth of lemonade and iced tea flavors.

As for Spring House’s Championship Pale Ale, it’s on tap not only at the Open but at the main Lancaster brewery plus Spring House’s other locations: The Coffin Bar in Lancaster and The Tavern in Strasburg. Cans are available at the brewery plus places that typically stock Spring House libations in a form that can be tossed in a cooler for golf outings.

“It’s flavorful with hops but light and still easy to drink,” Armstrong says. “Something you can maintain throughout a full 18 holes.”
