As one of the most important Swing Era arrangers, he helped to author the signature sounds of Count Basie, Benny Moten, Jimmie Lunceford and Glenn Miller. Durham’s musical career began at age ten and he played at circuses with the 101 Ranch Brass Band and in the Yankee Stadium at 18 years old. In the 1940s, he established his own band, directed an all-girl orchestra, and brought together key Texas jazz men like Hot Lips Page, Joe Keyes, and Buster Smith.
