Governor Shapiro Signs Into Law Bill Expanding the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program on August 4, 2023, at an event in Scranton.

Eligible renters and property owners can now apply for rebates through the Pennsylvania Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program. And starting this year, an online Spanish-language application is available through the state’s myPATH filing system.

The program gives rent and property tax relief to older residents and those with disabilities whose household income is $45,000 or less. To qualify for this money, residents must be at least 65 years old — or at least 18 years old for those with disabilities. Widows and widowers 50 and older can also qualify.

The household income cap of $45,000 was raised from $35,000 by a bipartisan bill signed by Gov. Josh Shapiro in 2023. The new law set the income cap to rise yearly with inflation, and also increased the amount of rebate money that applicants can receive.

Depending on income, applicants can be eligible for as much as $1,000 in rebates — up from $650 before the new law — as well as extra rebates for some property owners and renters depending on their income, property tax and where they live.

The governor’s office said that about 5,700 more Lancaster County residents are expected to qualify for rebates under the new rules, according to reporting from LNP | LancasterOnline.

Online applications in Spanish and English are available at mypath.pa.gov.

Applicants can access forms and other information about the program at revenue.pa.gov/ptrr and can call 1-888-222-9190 for assistance. In-person and mail options are available in addition to the online myPATH application.

Applications for 2023 rebates are due by June 30, and rebates will be distributed starting July 1.
