All Creatures Great and Small was adapted from the novel of the same title by James Alfred (“Alf”) Wight. The Yorkshire, England veterinarian and bestselling author began his writing career at age 50 with a 1965 manuscript. After a reader’s suggestion to write his stories in first person, he published his book If Only They Could Talk in 1968 under the pseudonym James Herriot. In the U.S., this first novel and another were combined and published as All Creatures Great and Small.

By the 1970s, Wight’s novel brought him international fame with fans traveling from all over the globe to visit him at his practice, an invitation for lunch at Buckingham Palace from the late Queen Elizabeth, and an award for Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1979. Since 1970, His novels have sold over 80 million copies worldwide and translated into 36 languages. Tune in to be inspired by the stories that led many to explore a career in veterinary services.
