The spring of 1940 rings in change for many in Skeldale. James and Helen ponder the right time to start a family, and with Tristan serving in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, Siegfried is stretched too thin. A new veterinary assistant, Richard Carmody, joins and brings much needed help to the house and Miss Harbottle, an experienced bookkeeper, is hired by Siegfried to bring order to the madness.
