Kwanzaa was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga, Professor and Chairman of Black Studies at California State University, in 1966. Following the Watts riots in Los Angeles, Karenga wanted a way to unite Black people towards a positive cause. After founding the cultural organization, US, he researched African “first fruit” harvest celebrations and combined celebrations of the Ashanti and Zulu tribe to form the week-long holiday from December 26th to January 1st. The foundation of Kwanzaa is it’s seven principles or Nguzo Saba. Unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith are principles that all participants are encouraged to embody. Kwanzaa is a way of life, not a yearly celebration, so tune in to experience the cultural history and importance of Kwanzaa.
