Call the Midwife is based on the best-selling memoirs by Jennifer Worth that highlight the humorous and colorful stories of midwives and the families they serve in London’s East End. The series was created by Heidi Thomas and is set in Poplar, London where some of the poorest women receive quality care from nurses and midwives. Thomas believes that the show can be enjoyed as an escapist treat or as an exploration of social history, prejudices, and past difficulties faced by people of a different time.
