In the summer of 1928, the dynamics between guests and staff at a beach hotel by the North Sea are depicted in this Danish series. The lives of Fie, the chambermaid, Amanda, the merchant’s daughter, and Morten, the local fisherman intertwine as each try to pave their own way in the world.  

Season One finds the hotel’s wealthy summer patrons and hard-working local staff reunite during 1928 as they do every summer. Though each lead different lives, some of immense privilege and others of worries and service, their worlds merge to uncover hopes, secrets, and conflicts that live amongst this pristine environment.

Season Two begins in summer of 1929 with hotel regulars expecting to be pampered by Mrs. Anderson and her staff. Drama ensues when the hotel’s heir returns from his long stay in America to collect his inheritance which could affect the hotel’s longevity. Meanwhile, Fie and Amanda both try to find love and stability in their lives. The last episode of the season finds the New York Stock Exchange crash and send shock waves across the world.

Season Three begins in the summer of 1930 with the effects of the stock market crash spreading to Europe. While the hotels regulars return for another summer of relaxation, many struggle through bankruptcy, marital strife, confusion with their sexuality, midlife crises, and secret affairs. The preoccupation with their personal issues outshines the drastic changes happening in Germany.

Season Four begins in the summer of 1931 with Fie taking on additional day-to-day responsibilities as Mrs. Anderson recovers from an illness. While the hotels usual patrons settle in, new members arrive. While everyone tries to get back to normalcy, newspapers remind guests and staff about the financial crisis rocking the world’s economy.

Season Five begins in 1932 with regulars enjoying their holiday of leisure by the sea. A new Copenhagen couple, the Molins, check into the hotel and their presence causes a stir at the hotel.

Season Six begins six years after season five. In the summer of 1939, negativity glooms over Europe, but patrons look to ignore the international crisis and enjoy their holiday. While Amanda struggles to keep her film company afloat, a secret affair looms between Mrs. Frigh’s son Leslie and the new maid Nana, an Austrian Jew named Robert escapes from a German concentration camp, and Madsen walks a tightrope to preserve his marriage and receive the right to build in Nazi Germany.

Season Seven opens in the summer of 1940, which finds Amanda as the hotel’s new owner. Despite the war, guests return for respite from the Nazi invasion of April 9th. While Molin and Madsen seek to benefit from doing business with the Germans, Amanda’s rejection of a Nazi officer’s proposition could jeopardize the hotel’s success.

Season Eight begins with a looming second world war during the summer of 1941. Though hotel regulars return, the arrival of a Communist painter, two German soldiers and an orthopedic surgeon causes discomfort for everyone.

Season Nine begins in the summer of 1945 with Europe’s liberation from Nazi occupation. Eager to celebrate their freedom, guests enjoy another holiday at the hotel, but peace is not always as it seems.
