The History of Black Sororities & Fraternities-Monologue + Panel discussion

The rich history of the Divine 9

  • By Marquis Lupton

Black sororities in America have a rich history, rooted in the struggle for education and civil rights. Established to provide support and sisterhood, these organizations became essential in fostering leadership, scholarship, and community service among Black women. Notable sororities like Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta have made significant contributions to social activism and community development.

In a special episode of The Melanin Report, we delve into the legacy and impact of Black sororities. Part one features a monologue exploring their historical significance, emphasizing their pivotal role in empowerment and social change.

I interview three inspiring members of Black sororities, delving into their personal experiences, the values these organizations uphold, and the impact on their lives and communities. Through their stories, we aim to highlight the diverse narratives within these sisterhoods and celebrate the achievements of Black women in academia, leadership, and service.

This discussion is part one of a series dedicated to unraveling the layers of Black sororities and fraternities, acknowledging their profound influence on culture and society. As we explore their journey, we strive to amplify the voices of those who have thrived within these sisterhoods, fostering a deeper understanding of their contributions to the African American community and beyond.
