WITF Presents Ready, Set, Explore Media and Makers

Explore new digital tools and practice media literacy

  • By Staff

[HARRISBURG, PA] – Step into a world of inspiration, imagination and creativity at WITF’s free family event, Ready, Set, Explore Media and Makers, on October 14 between 10am and 2pm at Ewell Plaza, 123 North Queen St., Lancaster.

An evolving digital world has made the ability to imagine and create even more important and accessible than ever. At Ready, Set, Explore Media and Makers, families can explore the science of green screens, design with Cubelets, code with Ozobots and paint and program using Sphero robots.

Then, dive into graphic design principles to tell a story, meet journalists and practice media literacy by becoming a headline detective. Families can meet The Cat in the Hat, too.

Ready, Set, Explore Media and Makers introduces learners to technology beyond their phone or tablet and, hopefully, sparks an interest in STEM learning, digital media, media literacy, and robotics,” said Dr. Andrea Kolb, WITF Senior Vice President and Chief Education Officer. “They can explore possible career paths, practice coding through robotics, and practice critically analyzing news to determine if it is real or fake.”

This free family event is open to the public and learning stations are designed for kids and teens, ages 3 to 14 years old. Free tickets are available at witf.org/rsxmakers.

Ready, Set, Explore Media and Makers promotes media literacy by teaching children how to create and critically analyze digital content. The robotics, coding and green screen learning stations engage families in hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics concepts. Photography, graphic design and content creation foster a spirit of collaboration, inspiration and innovation.

WITF will give a free book to every child who attends Ready, Set, Explore Media and Makers. Young readers will receive “Oh, The Things They Invented!” by Bonnie Worth, Aristides Ruiz and Joe Mathieu, and older readers will take home “Rube Goldberg and His Amazing Machines” by Brandon T. Snider and Ed Steckley.

Registration is requested. Reserve tickets for free at witf.org/rsxmakers.

Ready, Set, Explore Media and Makers is an outdoor event. In the event of rain, the event will move inside the Lancaster Public Library, 151 North Queen St., Lancaster.

WITF’s Ready, Set, Explore Media and Makers is presented in partnership with the Lancaster STEM Alliance with support from Highmark, United Concordia Dental, Commonwealth Charter Academy, CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health, Goodwill Keystone Area, The Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation, and the Anne M. & Philip H. Glatfelter, III Family Foundation.
