Set in the fictional country village of Highbury and the surrounding estates of Hartfield, Randalls and Donwell Abbey, Emma Woodhouse played by Romola Garai, delights in the conviction that she’s the perfect matchmaker. But she’s playing a dangerous game as she persuades her new friend, the young, pretty and socially inferior Harriet, to reject a marriage proposal to a local farmer in favor of dashing Mr. Elton. So begins a story which challenges Emma’s naivety, her social preconceptions and her own relationships.

Mr. Knightley, played by Jonny Lee Miller, is Emma’s only social and intellectual equal in Highbury, living at Donwell Abbey, a rambling country estate a short walk from Hartfield. His brother is married to Emma’s older sister. He has known Emma since she was born, and there’s an easy familiarity between them. He is an individual, quick-witted, with a dry sense of humor — often used in sparring with Emma. But he also has a strong moral compass — and at times he strongly disagrees with Emma over her behavior.

BAFTA-winning writer Sandy Welch will unfold Austen’s witty and compassionate story over four hour-long episodes, providing a rich insight into one of the author’s most complex characters.
