How did Benjamin Franklin fool counterfeiters? There’s new research into it.

On this date in 1775, the U.S. postal system was established by the Second Continental Congress, with Benjamin Franklin as its first postmaster general. Franklin put in place the foundation for many aspects of today’s mail system.

It’s just one of many positions which Franklin the inventor, scientist, publisher and diplomat held throughout his life.

More than 200 years later, just recently, researchers at the University of Notre Dame how Franklin devised a way to print paper money that made it difficult to copy by counterfeiters.

Counterfeiting was rampant during the American Revolution as Khachatur Manukyan, an associate professor of physics at Notre Dame pointed out on The Spark Wednesday, Franklin’s bills were difficult to reproduce because he included watermarks, special crystal and nature printing — nature printed images that were hard to duplicate.
