It’s the hottest week of the year but the work is never done in the garden or with plants, flowers and trees around the yard. How do you keep those plants and flowers or even the lawn healthy with the sun beating down?

How can you prepare for later in the season?

Horticulturist Erica Jo Shaffer is on The Spark talking about weeds, fertilizing, pruning and especially watering.

Shaffer said central Pennsylvania has probably gotten enough rain to keep plants and flowers healthy over the past few weeks, but there are plants that should get more water, “We’re not really so desperate on the rain water needing to be in our ground. It’s going to be more about your container plants because mostly we over plant our plants because we want one more thing. And so now the roots are competing for space, water, nutrients. So on these kind of heat temperatures, if you miss watering your hanging basket or your containers, like one day, you can wake up the next day and all or some of them can just be dead.”
