Human Footprint: “The Replacements”

Shane explores the surprising science and unexpected histories of “The Replacements”

Human Footprint is a new six-part science documentary that explores all the ways humans are transforming the planet – the good, bad and not-so-great. This science-travel show fusion series takes viewers from high-tech labs to primeval forests and from farms to the streets of New York City to examine what those transformations tell us about who we are as a species.

The visually stunning series is hosted by biologist and Princeton University professor Shane Campbell-Staton, Ph.D., and set to an original score by hip-hop and jazz legend, Adrian Younge.

Watch Human Footprint on WITF TV Wednesdays at 9pm, or live stream it through the PBS or WITF app. Stream each episode for free for four weeks after its television debut. The Replacements premieres on July 26 at 9pm and is available to stream for free starting July 27 through August 24.

Each episode of Human Footprint is built on a foundation of science and its biggest lessons are about human nature. In the premiere episode, the focus was on invasive species and how humans decide what does and does not belong.

In The Replacements, the science and unexpected histories of five animal and plant species are explored. Giving us a better understanding of how these species made allies of humans, grew to dominate the planet alongside us and changes their destinies, and our own forever.

In 4.5 billion years, our planet has never experienced anything quite like us – humans are no ordinary organism. Even our most basic needs – food, water and shelter – place a huge burden on the planet’s resources.

Through Shane’s interviews with an eclectic cast of people, Human Footprint discovers the complex motivation behind our impacts and unveils opportunities for a less lopsided co-existence.
