  • Christina Zeiders

WITF is honoring and celebrating Juneteenth with several radio and television specials.

Sunday, June 18 at 6pm: Listen to a special live broadcast of Notes from America with Kai Wright. WNYC’s Kai Wright and Houston Public Media are teaming up again for this live broadcast. Kai will speak with local leaders of the original Juneteenth movement – including Zion Escobar, who is working to preserve the site of Freedmen’s Town – to learn more about the history of the holiday and hear from callers.

Week of Juneteenth, June 19 – 23: WNYC’s Helga will take the place of The Spark. Artist, performer and show host Helga Davis speaks with creative, cultural change-makers whose work expands our imaginations as we explore what we think we know about each other.

WITF TV

Sunday, June 18 at 2pm: NJ PBS’ Price of Silence: The Forgotten Story of New Jersey’s Enslaved People explores the history of New Jersey slavery, which began in agriculture, but spread to the state’s port trade and early industry. Despite laws passed as early as 1804 to phase out slavery, some men and women were enslaved through the Civil War. Price of Silence (Part 1 | Part 2) is available to stream for free through the PBS or WITF app.

Fire on the Hill: The Cowboys of South Central LA is streaming free until June 29 on the PBS or WITF app. You can also watch it on WITF TV on Monday, June 19 at 10pm.

Monday, June 19 at 10pm: The critically acclaimed documentary Fire on the Hill: The Cowboys of South Central LA paints the stories of three Black cowboys as they each find purpose, hope and freedom through the cowboy lifestyle. Their journey takes viewers from the streets of L.A. to the professional rodeo circuit and explores what it means to be a modern cowboy. Stream Fire on the Hill for free until June 29, 2023, using the PBS or WITF app.
