Last Sunday, we saw that the honeymoon was certainly not over, at least not between James and Helen. However, reality did start to set in as everyone returned to post-wedding “regular” life, adjusting to their new living situation and all the stressors that come with it.

Watch All Creatures Great and Small: Surviving Siegfried on Sunday, January 22 at 9pm on WITF TV, stream it for free using the PBS Video app until February 4, or binge the entire third season now with WITF Passport!

This episode is a pretty tough one. Siegfried’s First World War experiences resurface as he struggles to save a scared and anxious racehorse. We will have to see some of the trials and heartbreak that Siegfried experienced during and after the war, and the emotional scars he and his friends couldn’t leave behind.

Will Siegfried be able to heal the horse’s emotional scars – and will he heal his own heart in the process?

Content Warning: This episode includes a storyline involving suicide. If you or someone you love is in suicidal crisis, call or text 988 for 24/7, free and confidential support. You can find additional resources at 988lifeline.org.

Meanwhile, James struggles to get the farmers to trust and respect him – a task made even more challenging due to his involvement with the government’s TB testing program. The farmers are skeptical, knowing that one positive case could shut down their farm. Will Helen convince her dad to be an early adopter of the program?

Tristan is blamed – once again – for the disorganization of the medicine cabinet and is tasked with completing a thorough inventory. But does Siegfried truly trust his brother to take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the practice?

Shown from left to right: James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph), Helen Alderson (Rachel Shenton), and Tristan Farnon (Callum Woodhouse).

There are moments of levity in this episode too. James must deal with the cankerous Cranford, Mrs. Beck needs to have her feral cat spayed, and Helen learns that sometimes it’s best to stand united with the boys when it comes to surviving Siegfried Farnon.
