A church in Schuylkill County, that has deep ties to Ukraine, held a prayer vigil when Russian attacked Ukraine in early 2022.

More than 30 people gathered outside of the state Capitol on May 3, 2022 to protest the leaked draft U.S. Supreme Court opinion that would reverse Roe v. Wade.

When a U.S. Supreme Court draft opinion leaked that the court would overturn Roe v. Wade, dozens of people headed to the state Capitol to voice their opinion.

WITF reporter Gabriela Martinez spent time with a family that escaped the war in Ukraine and was trying to start a new life in Lancaster County. Part of that journey was attending English classes at a Slavic church in Ephrata.

There children were students at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School operated by the Department of the Interior until 1919.

The U.S. Army’s Office of Cemeteries conducted a fifth disinterment at the Carlisle barracks that was once home to the Carlisle Indian Industrial School.  The remains for seven Native Americans were returned home.

A new organization in Lebanon County started this year with the goal of providing bicycles to people who need them.

Lancaster County resident Donald Born was finally laid to rest this summer after his remains were identified.

West & Ward, the Jess Zimmerman Band, and the Big Fat Meanies were just a few of the bands that were part of WITF Music this year.

Adam Caprioli was one of the people who shared their experience with WITF’s Brett Sholtis during his investigation into how county jails treat people who have a mental health condition.

The U.S. government announced it intended to close the Berks County Residential Center early next year, but would not be releasing the women detained there. Several groups gathered outside the facility to call for the release of those detained.

Lebanon City firefighters salute as the hurst that is carrying the body of Lt. William Lebo, who was killed in the line of duty on March 31, 2022, passes by on April 2, 2022. Two other officers were also wounded.

Lebanon City Police Officer Lt. William Lebo was shot and killed in the line of duty in March. Thousands of people turned out to pay their respects as his body was returned to Lebanon County.

Every year the snow geese migration bring thousands of visitors to Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area.

Shirley Clark, a professor of environmental engineering at Penn State Harrisburg, and her students spent time this summer studying what might be contributing to flooding in Middletown.

 

Climate change is prompting more Pennsylvania farmers to adapt crops and businesses, like Hugh McPherson who replaced his McIntosh apple trees.

The Pennsylvania Geological Survey got $6 million in this year’s budget for a new building to house its growing library of core samples. The samples are big cylinders of rock taken from deep underground, usually by fossil fuel companies looking for the best place to drill or mine.
