Sight and Sound Theatre in Lancaster County attracts thousands of visitors each year who have come to see their Bible focused live stage productions. In fact, Sight and Sound is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the county. Sight and Sound has now produced its first full-length feature film called I Heard the Bells.

I Heard the Bells is being shown in movie theaters across the country and has been one of the top box office draws since its release earlier this month. In fact, for the second straight week, the film sold the ninth most tickets of any film in the U.S. last week.

Joshua Enck, is the President of Sight and Sound Theatres who directed, produced and wrote I Heard the Bells. Appearing on The Spark Monday, he described the premise of the film,”I Heard the Bells is a true story about the story behind that famous Christmas song — I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day. It started out as a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow back in 1863, right in the midst of America, in the midst of the Civil War. It’s a poem that came out of heartbreak and heartache and in despair. And it really chronicles an emotional journey of the protagonist, Henry Longfellow, as well as, I believe, the nation itself. And so we were thrilled to go back in time and bring this classic Christmas song back to life again in this way.”

Was Enck surprised the film has done so well at the box office? “We learned that one of the top DMAs, areas that are being attracted to this film, one of the top three was Los Angeles. Now, Los Angeles would not know who Sight and Sound Theatres is most likely. Obviously, the East Coast, Sight and Sound has been around for 48 years. So Baltimore, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, all the way up and up and down the Eastern Seaboard, very familiar with Sight and Sound Theatres. But the West Coast really, really surprised us. The fact that one of the top three DMSs was Los Angeles was really, really surprising. But, at the end of the day, [we] realize how hope hungry our nation really is no matter where they live. When you have a story of hope, especially a true story rooted in our history, people were very hungry to be fed something that gives them hope and life and and peace and rest during the holidays. And so the fact that we’re able to do that, we’re so thankful and blessed.”
