Central Pa. museums to take part in Smithsonian Magazine Day

This Saturday is the 18th annual Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day.

It is a day for people to get out and enjoy museums, including the many in Pennsylvania.

The special day came about when the magazine celebrated its 35th anniversary and Amy Wilkins, chief revenue officer of Smithsonian Media, wanted to find a way to celebrate with all of the members who did not live in the Washington D.C. or New York areas.

“What if we could celebrate in their backyard?,” Wilkins asked. “What if it could be some place that they could get to, local to them?”

“It’s one day where museums all across the country participate to open their doors for people who want to come and experience what they have to offer,” she added.

Two of the museums in Central Pennsylvania that are participating in the event are the North Museum of Nature and Science and the York County History Center.

“I certainly discover something new every day,” said Andrea Rush, CEO of North Museum of Nature and Science in Lancaster. “Our collections are over 350,000 objects. I don’t think anyone could come to our museum and not experience something new. I think Smithsonian Day and Museum Day, is just a fabulous opportunity, if you are unable to access museums ordinarily or if you want to just try something new.”

This month the museum has an exhibit focusing on pollinators and native plants.

The York County History Center is made up of several sites including the Historical Society Museum, the Golden Plough Tavern, the General Horatio Gates House and the Colonial Courthouse to name a few.

We have a number of things happening that we think are fun, interactive, and engaging ways to learn more about York County’s past,” said Dan Fink, vice president of marketing and public relations at the York County History Center. “You can also visit our fire museum and get an understanding of York’s firefighting past.”
