Thursday is St. Patrick’s Day. For many Americans, it is a day when they highlight their Irish roots, wear green, eat corn beef and cabbage and celebrate with green beer or other alcoholic drinks. That’s the American version of the holiday.

In Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day is a time for celebration too, but still retains many of its original religious observations as well.

St. Patrick, who wasn’t Irish, is credited with spreading Christianity to Ireland and no, he didn’t drive the snakes out of Ireland. In Christianity, snakes are often seen as representing evil.

On Wednesday’s Smart Talk, we’re joined by Steven John, a writer and freelance journalist and founder of the online outdoor magazine Dad Gear Review, who has written about the history of St. Patrick’s Day, to tell the story.
