A typical visit to a doctor’s office involves completing a form about your medical history and depending on the reason for going to the doctor, a few minutes with a doctor. Other than the time spent in the waiting room, the whole process may take a half hour. Other than symptoms and past illnesses and conditions, it’s not much time to learn about a patient.
That’s where narrative medicine comes in.
Health professionals are learning more about their patients’ backgrounds, family situations and factors that may have led to their patients’ illnesses through storytelling. Often that story is in the form of something a patient or family member has written.
Dr. Andre Lijoi uses narrative medicine in his practice at Wellspan York Hospital and is with us to explain its benefits on Wednesday’s Smart Talk.
