(Harrisburg) — Two people died in a Wednesday morning shooting in Harrisburg, and police arrested a suspect after a chase that ended with a crash into a school bus in Londonderry Township.

Police were called to the shooting in the 1300 block of Liberty Street, near State Street, before 7 a.m. and remained at the scene at 9 a.m. along with the coroner and a forensic crime scene truck.

Three other people were wounded in the shooting and the victims were found inside a home.

The bus was carrying students who attend a Catholic school in Elizabethtown, State Trooper Megan Ammerman said. All the students safely got off the bus and were later taken to their school.

District Attorney Fran Chardo confirmed police arrested a suspect after a crash in Londonderry Township. Pennsylvania State Police Spokeswoman Megan Ammerman said the school bus carried students from Mount Calvary Christian School in Elizabethtown. They all got off safely, she said, and the school was notified.

No students were injured, and a new bus took the kids to school, Ammerman said.

Route 230 was closed in both directions from Hertzler to Deodate roads in Londonderry Township, following the chase that ended near Hertzler Road, according to the Hummelstown Sun.

A police officer was injured in the crash, police said, as officers used a spike strip across the road to stop the suspect’s vehicle.

Harrisburg police Deputy Chief Dennis Sorenson confirmed multiple people were shot at the Liberty Street scene. The genders or additional details about the people who died were not released.

Sorenson said the investigation spanned multiple jurisdictions and was still very active Wednesday morning.

Officers from the Attorney General’s office were serving a narcotics warrant in the 1400 block of Liberty Street Wednesday morning when they heard a woman screaming for help.

She was covered in blood down the block, just 200 feet away. And she was with a girl, who appeared to be six to eight years old, also covered in blood.

The officers, including two from Harrisburg’s police department, ran to help them and discovered a horrific crime scene inside a home in the 1300 block of Liberty Street, where police later confirmed two people had died in a shooting.

Another adult and two young girls were injured either by gunshot or stabbing in the domestic violence attack, officials said.

The names of the people who died have not been released.

As the officers searched the home, the suspected gunman fled out of a side door just before 7 a.m.
Because of the officers’ quick response, they may have averted further bloodshed, said Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo. They relayed a description of the suspect’s car to other officers across the county.

Police later spotted the car, kicking off a chase that ended in Londonderry Township with the suspect’s arrest. The suspect hit a school bus, but no students were injured.

No charges have been filed against the 31-year-old man, who remains in custody at police headquarters.

His name has not been released.

A Lower Swatara police officer was hurt as officers were deploying a spiked strip across the road to stop the fleeing suspect. His leg was struck by the suspect’s car.
“It was an incredible cooperative effort among police agencies to apprehend an extremely dangerous person,” Chardo said.
