(Pottsville) – A midstate county commissioner is facing growing calls to step down after four women filed a federal lawsuit over sexual harassment claims.

The suit against Republican Schuylkill County Commissioner George Halcovage Jr. was filed in the Middle District of Pennsylvania at the end of March.

Since then, the leaders of the County Republican Party have said he should step down.

“The severity of the allegations and intensity of the federal lawsuit precludes Commissioner Halcovage from effectively executing his duties to the citizens of Schuylkill County,” they wrote in a letter.

Members of the Schuylkill County Democratic Party, along with several state legislators from the region and county row officers, are also calling on him resign.

Last summer, he was also under investigation for allegations of verbal and physical abuse of county employees.

But the state Attorney General’s office declined to bring charges.

The county commissioners, including Halcovage, did not respond to a request for comment.

He has previously denied the allegations.
