(Harrisburg) – Central Pennsylvania is bracing for the third major snowstorm of the season. Forecasters said it’s set to begin early Thursday, and last into Friday morning.

The latest system could bring another seven to nine inches of accumulation. This year, the midstate has already received about 10 inches of snow above average.

Greg Devoir, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service at State College, says tomorrow afternoon will see the heaviest snowfall, followed by a break in the evening.

“There may be a mix with some sleet or freezing rain during that lull because things won’t be lifted very vigorously in the atmosphere,” he said. “So, it looks like we lose our mechanism for snow and it turns to snow pellets or freezing drizzle for a while.”

Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing for the duration of the storm. Devoir warns against unnecessary travel during the afternoon commute tomorrow.

A Winter Storm Watch in effect for the entire region from 4:00 a.m. Thursday until 10:00 a.m. Friday.

“(The storm) is coming from the Southwest. Basically, what Texas is getting now is what we will be getting tonight, tomorrow and into Friday,” Devoir said.

Yet another storm could hit Central Pa. early next week, but Devoir said lighter snowfall is expected at this point.
