A Christmas Eve storm is forecast to bring rain and moderate flooding to central Pennsylvania.
The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for the Susquehanna River near Sunbury and Bloomsburg due to the combination of melting snow and heavy rain in the region. The river is expected to rise above flood stage in both areas Saturday morning.
The rest of central Pennsylvania is under a flood watch through noon Friday, as small tributaries of the Susquehanna will also be affected by the storm.
Rain will transition to snow as temperatures plummet on Christmas Day, though only trace accumulation is expected in the midstate.
Colder temperatures and wet surfaces also bring the potential for flash freezes early Friday morning. The highest risk of icy roads will be west of Harrisburg.
This #Christmas we are getting active weather! 🎁 Heavy rain on #christmaseve + melting snow may cause flooding. #Snow for Thurs night-Friday. >3″ possible west of I-99. Roads may be slick Thurs PM and Fri as temps drop very quickly. Fri & Sat will be very cold! #PAwx pic.twitter.com/XusIa800hO
