Good Shepherd Catholic School in Camp Hill has announced it will be closing.

A Catholic school in Cumberland County plans to close its doors this month after years of financial struggles. Reverend Neil Sullivan, pastor of Good Shepherd Parish in Camp Hill, says the decision to shutter the Good Shepherd Catholic School came after significant decrease in enrollment and the added stress from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is not something we planned to do or wanted to do,” said Father Sullivan. “However, it is something we need to do given our current situation and challenges beyond our control.”

Good Shepherd, a pre-K through eighth grade school, currently has 82 students and 26 faculty and staff. The school has seen a 43 percent decline in enrollment since 2016. In March of this year, 152 students were enrolled for the 2020/21 school year, but that number dropped by nearly half as of May 28th.

“As preparations are made to suspend the school’s operation, parish and school leadership will work closely with the Diocesan Office of Catholic Schools to support staff members and to assist families who wish to continue their Catholic education at neighboring Catholic schools,” the administration said in a statement today.

The school will focus now on expanding their Early Learning and kindergarten programs for students between 3 and 6.

The school opened its doors September 1, 1953.
