WITF’s original work to be featured by World Health Organization promoting quality human rights

WITF’s original documentary i go home, created in partnership with Pennsylvania agencies that serve people with intellectual disabilities, will help shine a spotlight worldwide on human rights. The World Health Organization (WHO) is including the work among other resources in its training program promoting equality, human rights and recovery in mental health.

The WHO is addressing the poor quality of mental health services and care around the world with a series of trainings. Through the QualityRights Initiative, WHO trainings aim to unite and empower people to improve care in mental health and related services and promote the rights of people with psychosocial intellectual and cognitive disabilities.

“WITF is proud of our documentary productions and especially i go home,” said Senior Vice President & Chief Content Officer Cara Williams Fry. “In the not too distant past, the treatment of people with intellectual disabilities in Pennsylvania and across the nation was horrible. Unfortunately, many examples of atrocities can be found across the world today. By educating people about the past, we will hopefully be able to learn to treat all people with the dignity they deserve. The creative staff at WITF is pleased The World Health Organization will be translating i go home into French, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, and Arabic for use in Quality Rights meetings around the world. “

WITF tells the story i go home, in a one-hour original documentary on the history of people with intellectual disability and the developments that fueled parents and the public to ignite change. This documentary will be included within a 10-hour training that covers:

  1. Building capacity to combat stigma and discrimination, and promote human rights and recovery
  2. Improving the quality of care and human rights conditions in mental health and social services
  3. Creating community-based and recovery-oriented services that respect and promote human rights
  4. Supporting the development of a civil society movement to conduct advocacy and influence policy making
  5. Reforming national policies and legislation in line with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and other international human rights standards
