(Harrisburg) — A midstate prosecutor’s office is offering free training to businesses and faith groups to help them prepare for potential active shooter situations.

The Lancaster County District Attorney’s office already had plans to partner with the PA South Central Task Force to provide the training next month.

But DA Craig Stedman said the recent mass shootings in Dayton and El Paso underline the importance of being prepared.

“There’s just no question that this is an unfortunate reality of the world we live in today that any group is going to be potentially subject to one of these mass incidents,” Stedman said.

Stedman said businesses and churches don’t need to turn their facilities into fortresses, but should have a plan in place.

“It’s to give people some options they may not have thought about, some kind of actions, steps that they can take to minimize any kind of loss of life as well as save lives,” Stedman said.

The training will offer tips for countering an armed intruder as well as making building improvements to make an attack more difficult.

Organizers said they would like organizations to send several representatives to the course, who can then share the information with their colleagues.

The trainings will be presented in two-hour sessions on September 19th, for businesses, and September 24, for faith-based organizations. They will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center, 101 Champ Boulevard, Manheim.
