Thousands of temporary workers sought to ensure accurate census count

(Harrisburg) — The U.S. Census Bureau is looking for thousands of people to help it get a complete count in 2020.

In Cumberland County alone, the Census Bureau has openings for more than 1,600 temporary employees.

Positions include area office managers, field managers, supervisors and recruiting positions. A full list can be found at 2020census.gov/jobs.

Census data will be used by the federal government to allocate an estimated $800 billion to states for things like infrastructure, education, and Medicaid.

Based on 2010 Census data and Low Response Scores, Cumberland County estimates 16 percent of its residents don’t respond to the census. That could result in a potential loss of more than $80 million in funding for the county, each year, until the next census in 2030.

If left uncounted, Pennsylvania could lose an estimated $2,000 in federal funding per person, per year for the next decade.
