York neighborhood walk to recognize law enforcement work

(Harrisburg) — Law enforcement officers and activists in York plan to take to the streets Wednesday evening for a neighborhood walk.
Representatives from the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, city police department, mayor’s office, and the faith-based Community Street Soldiers plan to attend.
U.S. Attorney David Freed said the event is not intended to be a show of force.
“It couldn’t be further from that. This is to get out in the community on a nice night and engage with the folks on the street and just show our support,” Freed said. “Just show our support for the law enforcement and for the good, law-abiding folks in the community.”
Freed said the walk is meant to recognize the work of city police in reducing shootings and violence as well as inspire civic pride.
He applauds the department for trying new things, such as a Group Violence Intervention program, which is credited with cutting the number of city shootings in half from 2016 to 2017.
“You can do all the law enforcement you want. You can lock up all the people that need to be locked up, but you’re still not necessarily effecting positive change on the community,” Freed said.
The group is due set out from Shiloh Baptist Church on West Locust Street at 6 p.m.
