From The Context, PA Post’s weekday email newsletter:

Gov. Tom Wolf has pledged to veto any anti-abortion legislation that reaches his desk. But the recent debate in the state Capitol is worth talking about nonetheless. State of the State host Katie Meyer produced this engaging episode including an audio montage dominated by female state lawmakers and a conversation with a couple of her fellow statehouse reporters.  -Emily Previti, Newsletter Producer/Reporter

  • The Allegheny Front’s all about bats at the moment. Reid Frazier has an update on efforts to help little brown bats survive an epidemic of a fungal infection known as white-nose syndrome, a relatively recent scourge of the species. Kara Holsopple delves into the growing risks to bats posed by wind turbines in this story.

  • Ah, the sounds of summer. This year, they’ll include brownish periodical cicadas in some parts of Pa. The insects come around but once every 13 to 17 years, staying underground in the interim. What, exactly, are they doing down there for so long? StateImpact Pennsylvania’s Amy Sisk answers that question and more in this explainer.

  • Katie Meyer’s also working on a feature about falcons. Stay tuned — her reporting excursion sounded interesting/fun. In the meantime, take a gander at the state’s falcon cam.

  • Robert and Brooks Gronlund terminated benefits for nearly 1,000 departing workers via text message as their Snyder County factory closed. The move angered employees and floored the area’s business leaders, one noting the abrupt closure of Wood-Mode Inc. will be “catastrophic” for the region. John Beague has all the details here for PennLive and the Daily Item has a story about how the community’s mobilizing to help people losing their jobs.

  • The city of Pittsburgh isn’t going to enforce its gun ordinances until resolving lawsuits over the matter. If that sounds a bit familiar, you might be remembering the issue arising a few years ago. At the time, a later-overturned state law that made it really easy to sue over similar local laws prompted more than 100 municipalities to rescind or majorly overhaul related codes.
