(Harrisburg) — A family-owned grocery store in Lancaster County is selling its only location to Giant Food Stores.

Ferguson and Hassler owners said existing economics in the grocery industry no longer support the operation of an independent supermarket such as theirs.

In a news release, the owners said they approached Cumberland County-based Giant directly to take over their Quarryville, Lancaster County store.

Giant operates nine stores in Lancaster County and employs more than 1,400 people.

The grocery chain said Ferguson and Hassler employees will have the opportunity to interview with them for new jobs.

Ferguson and Hassler has been in business since 1916. Its last day will be June 19.

Giant plans to temporarily close the store for remodeling following the sale.

Giant has pledged to support charitable events championed by Ferguson and Hassler.
