Gun rights supporters set for annual rally at the Pa. Capitol

(Harrisburg) — Since 2006, hundreds of people have packed into the state Capitol once a year to argue in favor of gun rights.

The group is is expected to be back in Harrisburg today.

The event is dubbed the “rally to protect your right to keep and bear arms.”

It’s become a platform for the commonwealth’s conservative lawmakers to make their case against the gun-restricting bills that have begun to get traction in the legislature.

For years, the general assembly was hesitant to pass anything that could be seen as infringing on the Second Amendment .

But last session, lawmakers broke that streak with a targeted measure to keep firearms from domestic abusers.

This year, gun control advocates are taking a similar route with a bill to allow expedited firearms seizure when a person might be a danger to themself or others.

More aggressive measures–like one for universal background checks–are on the back burner for now.  

Speakers at the rally are expected to include an advocate for women owning guns, lawyers for prominent firearms groups, and a several lawmakers.
