Carlisle moving forward with revitalization efforts

(Harrisburg) — A midstate community is moving forward with a plan to bring new life to its downtown.
Demolition is underway at all three sites addressed by the Carlisle Urban Redevelopment Plan.
Three of the largest industrial plants in Carlisle, Cumberland County closed between 2008 and 2010. International Automotive Components, Carlisle Tire & Wheel, and Tyco Electronics left a combined 65 acres vacant in the borough’s northwest neighborhood.
Mason McClellan with the Cumberland Area Economic Development Corporation (CAEDC) said brownfield sites can be a turn-off to private developers. But his organization sees value in reinvesting in these properties.
“Sites that are in a core downtown, they have this great opportunity, but there are significant challenges–whether those are environmental concerns or the cost of demolition and site work–that make those projects more difficult than some other projects,” McClellan said.
CAEDC’s subsidiary Real Estate Collaborative is developing the former Tyco site into a mix of office space, retail and restaurants.
McClellan said demolition there should be complete by the end of May.
A final timeline on the future space dubbed “Hanover Commons” will be determined as the group finds tenants.
