There are 500 school districts in Pennsylvania, nearly every one with is own full-time superintendent.

A former educator, now living in Lancaster County, noticed and questioned the number of superintendents in central Pennsylvania school districts by submitting the issue on PA Post’s Listening Post, a forum for Pennsylvania residents to ask questions for reporters to investigate.

PA Post reporter Ed Mahon reports there are four reasons for the high number of superintendents and school districts in Pennsylvania, and specifically why it is difficult to reduce that number. He appears on Thursday’s Smart Talk.

Key points:

1:25 – How the story came about

2:10 – Listener comment

6:57 – There is a fear of closing schools

13:06 – Impact on teacher salaries

18:34 – There is nothing happening right now to change the status quo
