Three people have been confirmed dead in a crash that involved 11 vehicles on Interstate 83 in Dauphin County, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

The crash happened at about 8:30 p.m. Friday in the northbound lane near mile marker 47.9 in Lower Paxton Township.

The news release says six others were injured and transported to local hospitals. At this time, none of the names have been released.

Police say a tractor trailer failed to stop and struck multiple vehicles in the left lane, which caused both northbound lanes to be closed for several hours as state police reconstructed the crash.

State police say it is unclear as to why traffic had slowed down or stopped in the northbound lane right before the crash. They are asking anyone with additional information to contact them at 717-671-7500.
