After some delay, Starbucks became the first retailer to open at Hershey Towne Square on Friday, Sept. 14.

Other retailers are soon to follow, like Primanti Bros., one of the development’s anchor stores, which is scheduled to open Wednesday, Sept. 26. The Pittsburgh-based sandwich shop has signs in its windows announcing employee training is currently in session.

More businesses, such as Iron Valley Real Estate, Beef Jerky Outlet, Tropical Smoothie Café and Jersey Mike’s, appear to be nearing completion as well and could be open within weeks.

A new mixed-use retail and office development on West Chocolate Avenue along Route 422, Hershey Towne Square was once on track for a late July launch, then August. However, an abnormally wet summer caused delays in the construction schedule.

About half the buildings in the retail complex appear finished. The walks leading to many of the stores, on the other hand, remain closed or are nonexistent.

Some businesses are a bit further out, most of them situated on the Ridge Road side of the development. The United States Post Office, T-Mobile, Happy Nails & Spa and Freshido still lack signs – though the latter has a banner announcing it is hiring.

Toward the opposite end of the development, Great Clips doesn’t have a sign, either, but the walks and building’s exterior look ready. The same goes for Three Little Birds Boutique behind Primanti Bros. near the development’s center.

Another of the development’s anchors, the 9,000-square foot Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant at the heart of Hershey Towne Square, previously announced a fall opening.

A new two-story parking garage on Ridge Road is now available for use. A road behind the retail building will eventually add more parking spots, but is so far heavily trafficked by construction vehicles, equipment and workers.

The development – which sits on the site of the old Hershey Post Office – also contains a three-story, 60,000-square-foot office building tucked away behind the retail center.

If the Starbucks launch is any indication, Hershey Towne Square will quickly become a popular destination for restaurant-goers. The popular coffee chain at the corner of West Chocolate and North Linden Road is already bustling with activity.
