Camp Echo Trail in southern York County has been retired, logged and put up for sale – and that whirlwind of events isn’t sitting well with some people.

Julie Nelis has been a Girl Scout leader since 1999. During that time she grew to love Camp Echo Trail and was surprised by the news of its closure.

“I was in disbelief. There was heartache, and I was literally crying,” she said. “It felt like someone squeezing your heart. I have no understanding why they thought this was a good idea.”

Camp Echo Trail was one of three camps closed by the Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania late last year. About 175 acres of Camp Furnace Hills in northern Lancaster County
