(Harrisburg) — As Pennsylvanians spend time outdoors this summer, state officials are offering advice as to how people can protect themselves from disease.

One of the diseases of concern is West Nile Virus, which can be transmitted by mosquito bites,.. while another is Lyme Disease which people can get from deer tick bites.

Pennsylvania Secretary of Health, Dr. Rachel Levine, says in an effort to combat Lyme Disease, increased funding in this fiscal year’s budget has been targeted to help implement the recommendations of the state’s Lyme Disease Task Force.

“With this money we’re going to hire a number of public health experts to help us with education, with awareness,.. and this includes education in the schools as well as education to the public,” she said.

The Department of Environmental Protection says people can reduce the chances of contracting West Nile Virus by eliminating standing water around their homes where moquitoes can breed.
