Investigation nearing end in Lancaster police stun gun incident
Screenshots captured from bystander video of the incident.(Lancaster) — The investigation into a Lancaster city police officer’s use of a stun gun on an unarmed man is nearing completion.
An officer shocked Sean Williams, 27, after he was told to sit on a sidewalk in an incident caught on video late last month.
Police said it was because Williams failed to follow commands about how to position his legs. Critics note two different officers are heard giving him conflicting orders. Williams has since filed a federal lawsuit against the involved officers and the police department.
Mayor Danene Sorace said city investigators need to speak with one more person before the probe can be wrapped up.
“We are waiting for one additional interview to corroborate their statement that they gave to police on June 28th,” Sorace said. “So, as soon as that last interview is conducted, to corroborate testimony that they’ve already given, all that information will then be supplied to the district attorney’s office and it will be up to them what they do with it at that point.”
Sorace said no action has been taken with the officers involved, because they did not violate the city’s current use-of-force policy.
A committee is being assembled to review the policy as citizen and civil rights groups — including the NAACP’s Lancaster chapter — call for changes.
