Memorial Day: ‘Remembering why we are celebrating this day’

Forty students from St. Rose of Lima Elementary School in Jackson Township placed about 700 flags at Holy Savior Cemetery in Manchester Township Wednesday to prepare the cemetery for Memorial Day weekend.

The school has been placing flags on the grave sites of veterans at the cemetery for about eight years.

Armed with bundles of flags and maps marked with veteran graves, the students started distributing the flags and got a group history quiz about the origins of Memorial Day by Principal Peg Rizzuto.

Ending the quiz, Rizzuto said: “Remembering why we are celebrating this day” is the most important reason for being here.
