Governor Tom Wolf announces that 500,000 Pennsylvanians have enrolled in the new expanded Medicaid program in a press conference at Penn State Hershey Medical Center.

(Allentown) — Governor Tom Wolf has been promoting the benefits for Medicaid expansion.

Speaking at St. Luke’s University Health Network in Allentown recently, Governor Wolf discussed the positive health and economic benefits that have come since Medicaid was expanded in February 2015.

The governor says since that time, more than 720-thousand Pennsylvanians have health insurance they did not have before:

“Pennsylvania was sort of in the middle of the pack, pretty high in terms of the uninsured population, I think over 10-percent, double-digits.  We’re now one of the lowest in terms of the percentage of the uninsured.  It’s down around 5-percent,” he said.

Under Medicaid, health care providers may be reimbursed for substance abuse disorder, and about 120-thousand residents may receive treatment under Medicaid.

The expansion has also helped smaller hospitals, and created at least 15-thousand jobs.
