Everett Palmer Jr., 41, of Seaford, Del. had been injured in a crash in 2016.

(Springettsbury) — A York County Prison inmate who died Monday after hitting his head against a cell door had been arrested over the weekend in connection with driving under the influence during a 2016 crash, according to court records.

Everett Palmer Jr., 41, of the 700 block of Water Street in Seaford, Delaware, was pronounced dead at York Hospital at 5:46 a.m. Monday, according to York County Coroner Pam Gay.

An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday morning at Lehigh Valley Hospital.

Palmer was arrested Saturday and was arraigned on charges of DUI, disregarding traffic lane and careless driving, court records show. He was not able to post $5,000 bail and was committed to the prison.

He had been involved in a single-vehicle crash in the 6500 block of Steltz Road in Codorus Township on Oct. 28, 2016, and was flown to York Hospital, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

State police found his blue Honda Accord lying on its roof in the middle of the road. Emergency responders smelled an odor of alcohol on him, the affidavit states.

Troopers responded to the hospital where Palmer refused a test by stating “attorney.” State police later obtained a search warrant for Palmer’s blood to be sent to a lab for testing.

Tests showed his BAC was 0.148, the affidavit states. The legal limit in Pennsylvania is .08 percent.

The affidavit, which was filed in December 2016, stated that Palmer’s address was in North East, Maryland at that time.

The coroner says Palmer became agitated Monday morning while being held in a single cell at the prison. He began hitting his head against the inside of his cell door.

Prison officers took Palmer to the prison’s medical clinic, where he became unresponsive. They started resuscitation efforts, and he was taken to York Hospital.

State police are investigating the death, which is standard procedure when an inmate dies
