Farmland Preservation hits the one billion dollar mark in PA
(Harrisburg) — Farmland preservation in Pennsylvania has reached a milestone.
Department of Agriculture Bureau of Farmland Preservation Director Doug Wolfgang says the State Farmland Preservation Board has reached the $1 billion mark in the state’s commitment to farmland preservation.
“That’s a billion dollars that we’ve invested in state funds since the programs beginning in 1988. In addition to that, counties at this point have contributed over $500-million,” he said.
More than 5,200 PA farms have been preserved through the program.
Wolfgang says the program is also nearing the preservation of 550,000 acres of farmland.
Agriculture contributes over $135 million to the state’s economy each year.
