Police search Dover coach’s phone for evidence he knew of wrongdoing

(Dover) — What, if anything, did Dover girls’ basketball coach Kevin Glover know about an alleged relationship between his junior varsity coach and a player?

That is what Northern York County Regional Police wanted to find out when they sought a search warrant on Jan. 18.

Police used the warrant to seize Glover’s phone and search it for evidence that he knew about an inappropriate relationship between junior varsity basketball coach Aignee Freeland and a 16-year-old player. Property seized from Glover was searched and returned last Friday, according to the search warrant.  

Freeland was charged with institutional sexual assault on Jan. 10. She posted $100,000 bail on Jan. 12. 

Glover has not coached the team since before Christmas. He has also voluntarily stepped down and been suspended from his role as Girls AAU Basketball Academy Director at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster.

At a Dover Area School Board meeting on Jan. 18, Dover School Board President Nathan Eifert said Glover is “an active employee of the school district and is on a leave of absence at this time. Beyond that the board can not comment on anything that is related to a personnel matter.”

Glover has not returned calls seeking comment. 

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed against Freeland, police conducted a forensic examination of the player’s cell phone on Dec. 20. They found text messages between the girl and her mother about conversations with Glover on Dec. 6 and 7 about contact between the victim and Freeland. 

When police interviewed Glover on Jan. 5, he said the girl’s mother had contacted him on those dates regarding her daughter’s behavior. He denied knowing that his player and Freeland were in a relationship, according to the search warrant. 

Forensic analysis of Freeland’s phone showed she and the teen had texted about the teen’s mother having contacted Glover.

At Thursday’s school board meeting, a Dover student-athlete who said she was “directly in the accusations,” said that “Coach Kevin knew nothing about anything … He’s done nothing wrong.”

The player’s mother also defended Glover at the school board meeting.

“He never knew a single ounce of any of it,” she said. “Never was there anything inappropriate that any of us knew. If he loses his position, not just Dover, there’s going to be an entire county that’s in an uproar.” 

Parents of Dover girls’ basketball players defended Glover at the meeting. A number of players also spoke to his character. 

Freeland’s preliminary hearing is at 1 p.m. Jan. 25 in front of Judge David C. Eshbach.
