Pennsylvania’s mushroom industry featured at the Farm Show

Harrisburg) — Mushroom farmers are at the Pennsylvania Farm Show this week.

Mushroom Farmers of Pennsylvania spokesperson Gale Ferranto says 58 family-owned and operated mushroom farms in Pennsylvania grow two-thirds of the mushrooms produced in the United States in what is a $560 million dollar industry.

“Mushrooms have been grown in the Commonwealth for about 120 years.  We have a long legacy of growing mushrooms here,.. most in southern Chester County and Berks County,” she said.  

Ferranto said Kennett Square is known as the mushroom capitol of the world with mnushroom farming in the area producing over a million pounds of mushrooms a day.

The 102nd Pennsylvania Farm Show comes to a close today at 5pm.
