Cumberland County counts on continued growth in new plan
(Harrisburg) — Cumberland County has adopted a new plan to guide growth over the next several years.
The plan sets goals such as ensuring an adequate supply of housing, improving transportation infrastructure, and preserving natural and historic resources.
Of the 3,000 people who responded to a survey about county objectives, 70 percent said conservation projects are very important to them, and nearly 80 percent would pay additional taxes to support projects for recreation and farmland preservation.
Planning director Kirk Stoner said many who responded feel there is already enough industrial development and housing in Cumberland County. They like the status quo.
But, he said the county needs to plan for growth.
“We have to work with our residents to understand that we are the fastest-growing county in the state, the reasons behind that, and that if we want to keep our quality of life, we like the way things are in Cumberland County right now, planning is an essential tool to make sure that we keep that status in the future,” Stoner said.
Cumberland County’s population grew by five and a half percent between 2010 and 2016.
In neighboring York and Dauphin counties, growth was closer to two percent over the same time period.
