(Harrisburg) — If you’re interested in getting a REAL ID federally-compliant Pennsylvania driver’s license or identification card, the time to prepare is now.

REAL ID driver’s licenses or ID cards will meet requirements to board a commercial flight or to visit a secure federal building on or after October 1st of 2020.

These licenses or ID cards won’t be available in PA until the spring of 2019,.. but several documents will be required of those who obtained their original licenses before September of 2003, including proof of ID such as a birth certificate, Social Security card, proof of legal name changes and two proofs of address.

PennDOT’s Alexis Campbell says the time to gather these together is now.

“You’re not often asked to provide your birth certificate, so sometimes it may take time to find those things (or) you may need to replace them,” Campbell said
